How many hours of wedding photography do you need?

How many hours of wedding photography do you need?

The October 2026 survey groups packages by the hours written on the photographer's page. It does not say how many hours your wedding needs. You match the band to the day you are actually having.

How the survey groups the hours

  • 1 to 2 stated hours, elopement or register office: median £450 (n=511; middle half £350 to £597). 274 packages described that way did not state hours and are not in this row.
  • 4 to 5 stated hours, half day: median £850 (n=836; middle half £650 to £1,100).
  • 7 or more stated hours, or described as a full day when hours were not verified: full-day digital-only median £1,500 (n=2,057; middle half £1,195 to £1,900).
  • 49.0% of headline packages have stated hours beside the price (n=1,008).
  • Extra hour add-on: median £175 (n=681). The full-day per-hour figure is also £175 (n=1,008; middle half £130 to £219). Those are two different rows: an add-on price, and the full-day price divided by stated hours.

Surveyed 4 October 2026. The same definitions are on the methodology page.

A practical way to choose

List the parts of the day you want photographed: getting ready, the ceremony, portraits, the meal, the evening. A ceremony and a short meal can sit in 4 to 5 hours. A register office ceremony is often the 1 to 2 hour band, and the council fee for that room is in what a registry office wedding costs in the UK. The legal steps for a short ceremony are in how to elope in the UK. Getting ready through an evening party is the full-day band of 7 hours or more. If the quote does not state hours, ask, because 49.0% of headline packages are the ones with hours written beside the price (n=1,008).

Then compare the quote with a local page, for example Derby, Edinburgh or London. What the package includes covers albums and second photographers, which are priced separately from the hours.

Questions

Is a full day eight hours?

In this survey a package counts as a full day when stated hours are 7 or more, or, when hours were not verified, when the page calls it a full day. The survey does not use a separate 8-hour price.

What does a half day cost?

A half day of 4 to 5 stated hours has a median of £850 (n=836; middle half £650 to £1,100), surveyed 4 October 2026.

What if the quote does not say how many hours?

49.0% of headline packages have stated hours beside the price (n=1,008). If hours are missing, ask before you compare it with a package that states them.
