To elope in the UK you still book a legal ceremony. England and Wales use one set of notice rules. Scotland uses another. The photographer comes after the registrar has a date, and a small guest list usually means a short spell of coverage rather than a full day.
England and Wales
You sign a legal statement at your local register office. GOV.UK calls this giving notice. The office is the one for a registration district you have lived in for the past seven days, and you normally book an appointment. The earliest ceremony is 29 days after that signature. GOV.UK's own example is notice on 1 May, with a ceremony from 30 May. The wedding then has to take place inside 12 months of the notice.
If you live in two districts, you each give notice, and the appointments can fall on different dates. If one of you is from outside the UK, you give notice together unless you both have British or Irish citizenship, settled or pre-settled status, or an EU Settlement Scheme application made on or before 30 June 2021 that is still waiting on a decision or an appeal. That joint appointment is at a register office where at least one of you lives. An Anglican wedding can follow a different path, which GOV.UK says to check with the venue.
The notice fee and the room fee are published by the council, and they are not the same number. What those rows look like in 2026 is in what a registry office wedding costs in the UK.
Scotland
An elope wedding UK plan that crosses the border changes the paperwork. Each of you submits a marriage notice to the registrar of the district where the ceremony will be held, which is section 3 of the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977. National Records of Scotland's leaflet RM1, in the copy published by Shetland Islands Council, says the completed notices have to be with that registrar no later than 29 days before the intended marriage, and that giving the office 10 to 12 weeks leaves time for the documents to be checked. The Registrar General can allow a shorter run-in only in exceptional circumstances.
Section 6 of the same Act says the district registrar does not issue the Marriage Schedule within 28 days of receiving the notice, unless the Registrar General authorises an earlier date after a written request. If more than three months have passed since the notice was received, the Registrar General may ask for a fresh notice before the schedule is completed. The leaflet also asks for two witnesses aged 16 or over, at a civil ceremony or a religious or belief ceremony. The longer walk-through is how to elope in Scotland.
What to ask for in the photography quote
People looking up elope wedding packages UK are usually trying to price a legal ceremony plus a photographer, not a single product sold nationwide. Ask the photographer for the hours, whether the edited files are in the price, and whether an album is included. About 70% of UK headline packages do not say whether an album is included (69.9%, n=1,438), so the question is worth asking on a short booking too.
A ceremony and a few portraits fit the 1 to 2 hour row. On the hours guide that row has a median of £450 across 511 packages. The count was taken on 4 October 2026. The council's ceremony invoice stays separate from that figure. Name the office, the start time and the hours you want when you request quotes.
Questions
Where do we give notice if we live in different districts?
In England and Wales, each of you gives notice in the district where you have lived for the past seven days, so two home districts mean two appointments, and they can be on different dates. In Scotland both marriage notices go to the registrar for the district where the ceremony will be held.
What should an elope wedding packages UK quote include?
Ask for the hours, the edited files, and whether an album is included. The council's ceremony fee is a separate invoice, published on the council's own table. For the photographs, the 1 to 2 hour median in the October 2026 survey is £450 (n=511).
Can the ceremony be any day after we give notice?
In England and Wales, GOV.UK sets the earliest day at 29 days after notice. Notice on 1 May means a ceremony from 30 May, and the ceremony has to fall within 12 months of the notice. Scotland's timing is the one in the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977 and in the National Records of Scotland leaflet, which the Scotland guide quotes.
How much photography does a small wedding need?
Cover the ceremony and a short portrait stop, and you are in the 1 to 2 hour band. If you are staying for a meal, move up to the 4 to 5 hour band on the hours guide and ask the photographer to state the hours in the reply.
